New Delhi: The Indian Air Force team has landed in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, for Exercise Pitch Black – 2024. This year’s edition of the biennial multinational flying exercise will be the largest iteration of the Royal Australian Air Force’s premier multilateral flying exercise.
The event will be held in Darwin from Friday, July 12, to August 2, 2024, and will involve a record-breaking 20 countries, over 140 aircraft, and 4,400 military personnel participating.
This year’s participation marks a significant milestone for India’s strategic military cooperation. New Delhi has sent a contingent of over 150 IAF personnel, including pilots, engineers, technicians, and controllers, who will collaborate with their counterparts from around the world. The IAF is also fielding four Sukhoi-30MKI multirole fighter jets and a C-17 Globemaster III, C-130J Hercules, and Il-78 transport aircraft.

One of the key highlights for the IAF will be the integration of the Sukhoi-30MKIs with other advanced fighter jets, like the F-35, F-22, and F-18. This interoperability training is crucial for strengthening India’s ability to collaborate with its allies and strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific region.
Exercise Pitch Black offers a unique platform for the IAF to hone its skills in large-force-employment (LFE) warfare. This complex scenario emphasizes coordinated operations between air forces from different nations, simulating real-world combat situations. The exercise provides valuable experience in planning, executing, and sustaining complex missions in a challenging environment.
Beyond enhancing combat skills, Exercise Pitch Black fosters mutual understanding and cooperation between participating air forces. The joint training exercises and social interactions contribute to building trust and strengthening diplomatic ties. This military diplomacy is essential for promoting peace and stability in the region.
