New Delhi: A woman flying officer of the Indian Air Force has accused a senior wing commander of sexual assault. The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the military community, is currently under investigation by the local police in Budgam, Jammu & Kashmir.

The IAF said it is fully cooperating in the probe.

According to the first information report (FIR) lodged with the police, the incident allegedly took place during a New Year’s Eve party in Srinagar on December 31, 2023, when the flying officer was taken to the wing commander’s room under the pretext of receiving a gift. Then the wing commander allegedly forced her into oral sex despite her repeated protests.

She managed to escape the situation but remained fearful and hesitant to report the crime due to prior instances of being discouraged from raising complaints.

The flying officer stated that her ordeal continued for months, leading to continuous harassment, mental torture, and social isolation within the IAF. She claims her assaulter acted without remorse, frequently visiting her office as if nothing had happened.

Initially reluctant, the officer eventually sought advice from two female colleagues, who encouraged her to file a formal complaint.

According to the FIR, after the flying officer complained to the IAF authorities, an internal inquiry was initiated. However, the officer expressed concerns about the investigation process, accusing the authorities of bias and attempts to conceal administrative failings. She claimed the internal committee tasked with investigating the case acted improperly and delayed her medical examination.

The investigation was reportedly closed in May 2024 on the grounds of insufficient evidence, with the IC citing the lack of eyewitnesses.

The officer allegedly continued to experience daily harassment, including being denied leave and requests for a different posting. She reported feeling trapped, as she was forced to interact with her alleged assaulter during official events. She said her mental and emotional toll has been severe, leading to feelings of isolation, constant surveillance, and even suicidal thoughts.

IAF’s response

In its response following the flying officer’s FIR and initiation of police probe, the IAF stated that it was fully cooperating with the local authorities to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation. An IAF spokesman confirmed that the Budgam Police approached the Air Force Station in Srinagar regarding the complaint.

The spokesman said, “We are aware of the case. The Air Force Station in Srinagar was approached by the local Budgam police station on the subject. We are fully cooperating towards this case.”

The Budgam Police are expected to conduct a detailed inquiry, including recording statements from both the complainant and the accused, as well as other potential witnesses. The investigation will also involve a medical examination of the complainant to gather forensic evidence.
