New Delhi: In a first move of its kind, the Indian Army’s Remount Veterinary Corps has commissioned four women officers and posted them in forward areas. These officers were inducted into the Meerut-based RVC in May this year. Their forward posting marks yet another step for the service towards gender inclusivity.

The women officers, trained in veterinary science and medicine, will be responsible for the care, training, treatment, and deployment of the Army’s animal assets, including horses, mules, and dogs, which are crucial for operations in challenging terrains. Their role is vital, particularly in areas where traditional vehicles cannot operate, making animal transport indispensable.

This commissioning is part of a broader move by the Indian Army to integrate women into various combat-support roles traditionally dominated by men. The decision to post these officers in forward areas highlights the growing trust in the capabilities of women officers and aligns with the Army’s ongoing efforts to ensure equal opportunities for women across all its branches.

The RVC, established in 1779, has a long history of providing logistical support and operational assistance through its specialized animal units. The corps also plays a critical role in counterinsurgency and counterterrorism operations, where trained military dogs are used for tasks like explosive detection, search and rescue, and patrolling.

This move is seen as a milestone in the Indian Army’s push towards greater gender parity, with more initiatives likely to follow in the coming years.
