New Delhi: In a tribute to the heroes of the 1971 India-Pakistan war, the Indian Army, in collaboration with the Flag Foundation of India, unveiled a monumental 108-foot-high Tiranga at the Longewala War Memorial, also known as Laungewala Yudh Sthal, in Rajasthan, on Saturday. The event commemorated the valour of soldiers who defended the strategic border outpost during the historic Battle of Longewala.
The national flag stands tall against the arid expanse of the Thar desert, symbolizing India’s enduring resilience and national pride. The mast, located at the iconic Longewala War Memorial, marks a profound gesture of respect for the brave hearts who repelled enemy forces during the 1971 war.
This battle, an integral part of India’s victory in the war, turned the tide in favour of Indian forces, showcasing exceptional military strategy and bravery.
Significance of Longewala War Memorial
The Longewala War Memorial honours the momentous battle that occurred on the night of December 4–5, 1971. A small contingent of Indian soldiers, supported by the Indian Air Force, withstood a massive assault by Pakistan’s tanks and infantry. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the defenders successfully repelled the attack, causing significant enemy losses and securing a decisive victory.

This confrontation is remembered as a testament to the Army’s valour and strategic acumen and marked the arrival of the Air Force as a war-winning service.
The newly installed flag at this historic site stands as a beacon of inspiration, particularly for visitors and younger generations, who come to learn about the sacrifices that shaped the nation's history. The Flag Foundation of India, known for promoting the display of the national flag across the country, played a vital role in making this installation possible.
This initiative is in line with the country’s efforts to celebrate its heritage and the sacrifices of its armed forces. The unfurling ceremony, attended by military personnel, dignitaries, and local residents, reflected collective national pride and unity.
