‘Prachand Paanch’: 5th Battalion of Rajput Regiment, known for its valour and sacrifice, turns 200

New Delhi: One of the oldest units of the Indian Army, the 5th Battalion of the Rajput Regiment, which has the distinction of having taken part in several operations and wars ever since it’s raising, has celebrated its bicentenary or 200 years – a saga of valour and glory – across the country.

Former Indian Army chief and governor of Mizoram, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh (retired) unveiled a commemorative postal stamp to mark the 200 years of the 5th Battalion of the Rajput Regiment in the Delhi Cantonment, on Saturday.

Raised in 1825 at Kanpur, the Rajput Regiment’s 5th Battalion is among the few units of the Indian Army to achieve two centuries of continuous service.

Having participated in active operations both before and after India’s Independence, this illustrious battalion has also been honoured with four consecutive citations in recent times for its exemplary dedication to the nation.

As part of the battalion’s bicentenary celebrations, numerous ceremonial and outreach activities were conducted, with the release of the special postal stamp and tribute by veterans to the war memorials at Jammu & Kashmir serving as one of the key highlights.

During the unveiling ceremony, Gen Singh lauded the battalion’s achievements and conveyed his best wishes for its continued success. The event brought together veterans, serving officers, and representatives from ADG APS – testament to the battalion’s enduring legacy and the camaraderie that underpins its formidable reputation.

In a subsequent solemn ceremony held at the Cariappa Parade Ground, Lieutenant General MK Katiyar, general officer commanding in chief of  Western Army Command, presented new colours to the 5th Battalion, which is also called the “Prachand Paanch” (Fierce Five).

These new colours are a replica of those already held by the battalion and symbolize the rich heritage and unbroken tradition of bravery that have defined the “Prachand Paanch” for two centuries.

During the ceremony, Lt Gen Katiyar also interacted with the battalion’s veterans, acknowledging their immense contributions in shaping the unit into one of the most distinguished infantry formations in the Indian Army.

 This milestone underscores the battalion’s unwavering commitment to duty – a steadfast legacy that the current generation proudly upholds.
