Imphal: The Assam Rifles recovered 351 cases of foreign-origin liquor worth around ₹12.83 lakh and foreign-origin cigarettes worth ₹76.5 lakh from Mizoram’s Mualkawi general area and Ruantlang in Champhai district respectively, on Tuesday. The total worth of the seized contraband is worth around ₹89.33 lakh.
In a media release, the Assam Rifles said the contraband was seized after carrying out a successful joint operation by the customs department of Champhai and Assam Rifles after receiving a specific intelligence input. The seized consignment was then handed over to the customs department for further legal proceedings.
It may be mentioned that smuggling of illegal foreign-origin liquor, cigarettes, narcotics, and other contraband is a major cause of concern for Mizoram, which shares its border with Myanmar. The Assam Rifles has been successfully launching such anti-smuggling operations with regularity in the state.
