Jammu: Pakistani troops opened fire from across the line of control (LoC) in Jammu & Kashmir’s Akhnoor sector targeting Indian posts without any provocation in violation of the ceasefire agreement, in the wee hours of Wednesday. The incident, which occurred at around 2.35am, left a Border Security Force soldier injured.
According to a BSF official, the injured soldier was swiftly evacuated to a nearby medical facility, where he is currently receiving treatment. His condition is reported to be stable.
In response to the unprovoked aggression, BSF troops retaliated and targeted the Pakistani positions from where the fire was directed. The extent of damage or casualties caused by the BSF fire on the Pakistani side remains unclear. The incident has heightened tensions along the LoC, with Indian forces on high alert to prevent any further escalations.
This ceasefire violation comes at a particularly sensitive time, as Jammu & Kashmir is preparing for the first phase of its three-phase assembly election, set to begin on September 18. Authorities have urged citizens to remain calm and vigilant.
Ceasefire violations between India and Pakistan have been relatively rare since the two nations renewed their ceasefire agreement on February 25, 2021. However, sporadic incidents have continued to occur, with the last significant breach reported in the Ramgarh sector last year, which resulted in the death of a BSF jawan.
Senior officials from the BSF and the Indian Army have reiterated their commitment to safeguard the nation’s borders and ensure the safety of its citizens. They have also emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region, especially during the election period.
New Delhi has condemned the ceasefire violation and called it a deliberate attempt to disrupt peace and stability in the region. Diplomatic channels are expected to be activated to address the situation and prevent further incidents.
