C-295 aircraft to be made in India

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay a foundation stone for setting up of Airbus-Tata’s plant for manufacturing of C-295 medium–lift tactical transport aircraft in a while at Vadodara in Gujarat.

All you need to know about C-295 transport aircraft:

The government had inked a deal for procurement of 56 C-295 aircraft, including 16 in fly-way condition and remaining to be produced in the country.

The cost of project is Rs 21,900 crore. It would replace the ageing Avro-748 planes of the Indian Air Force.

Airbus Defence and Space and Tata Advanced Systems will jointly manufacture and assemble 40 C-295 aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF) at Vadodara in Gujarat.

The manufacturing facility will also provide MRO support and service for the total 56 aircraft.

The Airbus C295 is a new-generation tactical airlifter in the light and medium segment.

It is robust and reliable but also highly versatile in terms of the number of different missions it can perform.

The C-295 conducts multi-role operations worldwide under all weather conditions.

It is fully certified and routinely operates day and night in combat missions in all weather extremes, from desert to maritime environments, from extremely hot to extremely cold temperatures.

With the new C295W version equipped with winglets, the aircraft is capable of transporting more payload over larger distances in the hot and high conditions, resulting in fuel consumption savings of around 4% and increased safety margins in mountainous regions.

With cabin dimensions of 12.7 m/41 ft 8 in (in length), the C295 has the longest unobstructed cabin in its class.

It can accommodate up to 71 seats, offering a much higher personnel-carrying capability than its competitors in this segment.

For the same reason, it can carry much more palletised cargo (up to five 88 in by 108 in standard HCU-6E pallets) with direct off-loading through its rear ramp door.

Short take-off and landing (STOL)

The C295’s STOL capability combined with a strong landing gear enable it to operate in the most austere locations with the worst conditions for take-off and landings.

The C295 is a tactical military transport aircraft with a light footprint to enable operations from short (no longer than 670 m/2,200 ft), soft and rough (CBR 2) unprepared airstrips. The C295 is also designed to provide outstanding low-level flight characteristics for tactical missions, flying at speeds down to 110 knots.

A key to C295’s unique patrol and surveillance capabilities is its FITS, which integrates, controls and displays the mission sensors – enhancing mission awareness and facilitating informed decision-making.

A new standard in avionics

New and modern avionics: intuitive Human Machine Interface (HMI) with touchscreen controls;

Easier operation, reduced pilot workload;

Enhanced tactical operations, thanks to an enhanced situational awareness;

Compliant with current and forthcoming civil and military requirements.

For the first time, this aircraft will be manufactured outside Europe.

India would be making the transport aircraft for the first time.

It is also for the first time that a private player would be making the aircraft.
