New Delhi: BrahMos Aerospace has become the first Indian company to announce job reservations for Agniveers recruited in the armed forces under the government's Agnipath scheme. The decision, announced on Friday, sets a precedent for other companies in the country, especially in the defence sector, to employ Agniveers, who are not selected for extended service after the initial four-year contract, into their workforce.
BrahMos Aerospace, an Indo-Russian joint venture known for producing the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile, has declared that it will reserve at least 15 per cent of its technical roles and 50 per cent of its administrative and security positions for Agniveers. This policy is designed to harness the skills and discipline that these individuals gain during their military service and to assist them in transitioning to civilian employment.
The Agnipath Scheme, launched by the Indian government in 2022, recruits young individuals between 17.5 and 21 years old for short-term, four-year stints in the Indian armed forces. These soldiers, called Agniveer, receive intensive training in technical, administrative, and combat roles. After completing their four-year service, 25 per cent are absorbed into the regular armed forces, while the others are given opportunities to integrate into the civilian workforce, particularly in defence-related roles.
BrahMos Aerospace said its initiative underscores the company's recognition of the value Agniveers bring with their military discipline, technical expertise, and national pride. It further said the company’s leadership believes that the training Agniveers receive aligns perfectly with the needs of defence manufacturing, particularly in high-tech, security, and administrative positions.
This move also aims to create a seamless transition for Agniveers, ensuring their skills are utilised effectively in a civilian context.
Additionally, BrahMos Aerospace is encouraging its 200-plus industry partners to adopt similar recruitment practices, further broadening employment opportunities for Agniveers across India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
