DRDO successfully tests long-range glide bomb ‘Gaurav’ from Sukhoi-30MKI, nears IAF induction

New Delhi: Aiming to further enhance India’s precision strike capabilities from the air, the Defence Research and Development Organization has successfully conducted a “release trials” of long-range glide bomb (LRGB) “Gaurav” from an Indian Air Force Sukhoi-30MKI.

The release trails were conducted for three days, starting March 8, paved the way for induction into the Air Force.

During the tests, the LRGB was integrated to multiple stations in different warhead configurations, with land target on Island. It hit a target nearly 100 kilometres away with pin-point accuracy.

Designed and developed by Research Centre Imarat, Armament Research and Development Establishment and Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, Gaurav is a 1,000kg-class glide bomb that steers towards its target using a hybrid navigation system that combines inertial navigation system (INS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) data.

A DRDO official said that the system has been realized with the support of development-cum-production partners, including Adani Defence, Bharat Forge and various micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

During the trials, several senior officials of DRDO and the Air Force were and reviewed the developments.

“The Centre for Military Airworthiness & Certification and Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance contributed towards Certification and Quality Assurance,” the DRDO said.

LGRB Gaurav was first tested in August 2024 from an IAF Sukhoi-30MKI off the coast of Odisha, as India Sentinels had reported then.

Complementing the DRDO, IAF and industry for successful development trials of LRGB Gaurav, the defence minister, Rajnath Singh, said that the development of LRGB will further enhance the capabilities of the armed forces to a great extent.

Samir V Kamat, who is the secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and chairman of DRDO, also congratulated the entire DRDO team on conducting the successful release trials.
