New Delhi: United States’ defence giant Lockheed Martin and India’s Tata Advanced Systems Limited have announced a collaboration to manufacture the C-130J Super Hercules tactical transport aircraft in India. This partnership is set to strengthen the strategic ties between India and the US, while also supporting the Indian Air Force’s medium transport aircraft programme.
The agreement between Lockheed Martin and TASL focuses on two main areas: establishing a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility and expanding local manufacturing capabilities. The MRO facility will be set up in India to support the IAF’s existing fleet of 12 C-130Js, as well as other global fleets of the Super Hercules aircraft.
The C-130J Super Hercules, known for its extensive use in special operations, combat missions, and humanitarian assistance, has been a key asset for the IAF since 2011. This facility aims to enhance the operational readiness and longevity of the aircraft, ensuring they remain a vital asset for the IAF.
It may be mentioned that Lockheed has long collaborated with Tata in India, where Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited (TLMAL) in Hyderabad has been producing airframe components for the C-130J for global markets. This deepened partnership underscores Lockheed’s confidence in India’s growing aerospace ecosystem and its commitment to support India’s self-reliance in defence production.
Sukaran Singh, CEO and managing director of TASL, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration. He said, “Collaborating with Lockheed Martin on the C-130J platform proposition for IAF’s MTA project is a milestone for Tata Advanced Systems. This announcement also signifies our entry into the defence MRO space for large aircraft platforms and deepens our relationship with Lockheed Martin.”
On his part, Rod McLean, vice-president and general manager at Lockheed Martin, highlighted the global presence and robust international supply chain of the C-130J. He said, “This agreement reflects our commitment to a self-reliant India and the confidence we have in our Indian partners.”
The expansion comes at a time when the IAF is seeking up to 80 medium transport aircraft, and Lockheed Martin’s C-130J is a strong contender. The C-130J Super Hercules, with its proven track record and versatility, will continue to be a critical asset for the Indian Air Force, enhancing its operational readiness and mission capabilities.
Besides, this collaboration also strengthens India-US defence ties, allowing for greater technology transfer, local production, and job creation. If Lockheed secures further contracts, the C-130J production line in India could become a key node in the aircraft’s global supply chain.
