New Delhi: The defence minister, Rajnath Singh, while delivering his speech at the Times Now Summit on Thursday, said the government was open to changes in the Agniveer recruitment scheme, if deemed necessary. The Agniveer scheme, aimed at recruiting soldiers for the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force, involves a four-year tenure, including six months of training followed by 3.5 years of deployment. After retirement, recruits have the opportunity to apply for continued service in the armed forces.
Singh emphasized the importance of youthfulness in the defence forces, stating, “Sena mein youthfulness honi chahiye” (There should be youthfulness in the armed forces). He praised the enthusiasm and tech-savviness of young recruits and assured that their future is secure. The government remains committed to making any necessary changes to enhance the scheme’s effectiveness.
In addition, Singh highlighted the government's vision for a self-reliant India by aiming to make the country an exporter of engines. He tasked the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) with exploring opportunities to produce engines domestically and collaborate with countries willing to transfer technology. Singh also reassured the nation that India's borders are completely safe, urging faith in the armed forces.
The Agniveer scheme, when implemented, attracted some fierce criticism from veterans in the armed forces and military observers. However, the top brass of the three services was firmly behind the government in implementing the scheme.
