New Delhi: As part of the ‘Har Shikhar Tiranga’ mission, the mountaineering team of the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS), led by Colonel Ranveer Singh Jamwal, will commence scaling Mount Kangchenjunga – India's highest and only 8,000-meter peak, starting April 7 in Sikkim.
Mt Kangchenjunga is also the third highest peak in the world.
With five highly skilled climbers and three support staff, NIMAS Director Col Ranveer Singh Jamwal himself will lead the expedition. The expedition to Mt Kanchenjunga is the last leg of ‘Har Shikhar Tiranga’ mission. The mountaineering team of NIMAS has already successfully climbed the highest peaks of 27 states of India.
On March 26, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth flagged off the NIMAS Mount Kanchenjunga Expedition 2025, which will conclude by the end of May, when the mountaineers reach the summit.
Mount Kanchenjunga is known for its treacherous terrain, unpredictable weather, deep crevasses and extreme altitude. Unlike other peaks over 8,000 metres, it demands a long and technically challenging summit push, testing even the most experienced climbers.
All the eight members of NIMAS mountaineering team have undergone rigorous training for the climb.
In 2023, the team scaled 27 mountain peaks across India, a feat unmatched in Indian mountaineering history.
Then, in 2024, the team successfully climbed a virgin peak in Arunachal Pradesh’s Gorichen, showcasing their ability to tackle unexplored terrain.
Col Ranveer Singh Jamwal has been honoured with the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award, India’s highest honour for adventure sports. It is worth noting that he has climbed the world’s tallest mountain peak, Mount Everest, not once or twice but thrice.
