New Delhi: India carried out a successful training launch of Prithvi II short-range ballistic missile, on Tuesday, the defence ministry said. The missile was fired from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the Odisha coast.
The ministry said the missile struck its target with high accuracy and successfully validated all its operational and technical parameters.
Prithvi II is a single-stage liquid-fuelled missile that can carry a maximum payload of 500 kilograms. It has an extended range of 350 kilometres. The tactical missile is an important component of India’s land-based nuclear deterrence.
The Defence Research & Development Organization developed it under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme and was first test-fired on January 27, 1996, and all its development stages were completed by 2004. The missile was inducted into the Strategic Forces Command in 2003.
