Kolkata: A delegation of 30 Mukti Joddhas (Liberation Warriors) and six Bangladeshi military officers will attend the Vijay Diwas (Bijoy Dibos) celebrations in Kolkata’s Fort William on December 15–16, commemorating India’s key role in the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh. The Mukti Joddhas, who formed the Mukti Bahini (Liberation Force), were trained by the Indian Army and fought together against Pakistan in East Pakistan, which ultimately led to the creation of the Bengali nation.
Organized by the Indian Army’s Eastern Command, the event highlights the shared history and sacrifices of both nations during the war.
This visit is particularly significant against the backdrop of recent tensions in India-Bangladesh relations. Issues such as cross-border water-sharing disputes, trade imbalances, and domestic political challenges, including violence against minorities, in Bangladesh have strained ties. Despite these tensions, the participation of Mukti Joddhas is being viewed as a positive development, underlining the enduring ties between the two nations.
The recent visit of Indian foreign secretary, Vikram Misri, to Dhaka, coupled with his discussions with Bangladeshi officials, played a crucial role in facilitating the participation of the Mukti Joddhas. As India Sentinels had reported, Misri emphasized New Delhi’s commitment to fostering a positive and constructive relationship with Dhaka, which paved the way for a positive response from the Bangladesh Army.
Preparations are in full swing, with various events lined up to honour the valour and sacrifices of the 1971 war heroes. The Vijay Diwas festivities will feature various activities, including interactions with war veterans, a military tattoo, and wreath-laying ceremonies. The participation of Mukti Joddhas is expected to be a highlight, symbolizing the strong bond of friendship and cooperation between India and Bangladesh.
