Colombo: The Indian Navy’s first indigenously built destroyer, INS Delhi visited Trincomalee in Sri Lanka from January 15 to January 17.

During her stay at Trincomalee, the ship participated in a variety of activities with the Sri Lankan navy, which included professional and social interactions, cross-deck visits, and sports fixtures.

A familiarization tour of the ship was also conducted for the officers of the Sri Lankan armed forces undergoing the Junior Staff Course, trainees from the Sri Lanka Naval and Maritime Academy, and several sailors from the Sri Lankan navy.

The ship’s visit to Sri Lanka signifies the strong navy-to-navy links and interoperability between the Indian Navy and Sri Lanka Navy.

INS Delhi, which is a guided-missile destroyer, was commissioned in November 1997. It is a 163.2-metre-long destroyer and is manned by a crew of 390. Currently, the ship is commanded by Captain Shiraz Husain Azad.

She is fitted with the-state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, including BrahMos missiles, which make her capable of detecting and neutralizing air, surface, and sub-surface threats. The ship is a part of the Navy’s Visakhapatnam-headquartered Eastern Naval Command. Currently, the flag officer commanding in chief of the Eastern Fleet is Rear Admiral Gurcharan Singh.
