New Delhi: The Indian Navy will commission its latest stealth guided-missile destroyer, Mormugao, on Sunday. It is the second ship of Project 15B. The defence minister, Rajnath Singh, will commission the indigenously built Visakhapatnam-class destroyer at Mumbai’s naval dockyard, following which Indian Naval Ship (INS) will be prefixed to its name.

According to the Navy, INS Mormugao, which has a displacement of 7,400 tonnes and measures 163 metres in length and 17 metres at its widest point, will carry sophisticated sensors, modern radar and weapons systems, like surface-to-surface missiles and surface-to-air missiles. With the array of hi-tech equipment and weapons it will carry, INS Mormugao will be one of the deadliest warships that has been built in India.

The Navy in a statement said: “Some of the major indigenized equipment/system onboard Mormugao include surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, torpedo tubes and launchers, anti-submarine rocket launchers, super rapid gun mount.”

Mormugao, which was built by Mumbai’s Mazagon Dock Limited, completed its basin trials on December 15, 2021, and started its maiden sea trials on December 19, 2021, commemorating the Goa Liberation Day.
