Mumbai/New Delhi: Vice Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh took over as the flag officer commanding in chief (FOC-in-C) of the Indian Navy’s Western Naval Command from Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, on Wednesday. Following this, a grand ceremonial parade was held at INS Shikra – the naval air station at Colaba, Mumbai – to welcome and honour the new commander.
Before taking over as the FOC-in-C of the Western Naval Command, VAdm Singh served as the vice-chief of the naval staff at the Naval Headquarters in New Delhi. VAdm Dinesh K Tripathi will now take over as the vice-chief of naval staff at Naval Headquarters.
After assuming charge as the commander of the Navy’s Western Fleet, which is also known as the “Sword Army” of the service, VAdm Singh paid homage to all personnel who have made the supreme sacrifice in service to the nation by placing a floral wreath at the Gaurav Stambh – Victory at Sea Memorial, at the naval dockyard in Mumbai.

About VAdm Sanjay J Singh
VAdm Singh is a graduate of the National Defence Academy, Pune. He was commissioned in 1986 in the Navy’s executive branch. In his 37-year-long career, he has served on most class of ships of the Navy and has held a range of command, training, and staff appointments, including assistant chief of naval staff (communications, space and network-centric operations), flag officer (sea training), commandant Naval War College, controller (personnel services) and deputy chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Operations).
VAdm Singh specialized in navigation and direction in 1992 and attended the Advanced Command and Staff Course in the United Kingdom, in 2000. He has undergone the Naval Higher Command Course at Naval War College, Mumbai, in 2009 and the National Security Strategy Course at the National Defence College, Delhi, in 2012.
He holds MSc and MPhil in Defence and Strategic Studies from Madras University, MA in Defence Studies from King’s College, London, and MA (History), MPhil (Political Science), and PhD (Arts) from Mumbai University. In recognition of his distinguished service, the VAdm was awarded the Nau Sena Medal, in 2009, and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, in 2020.
