Over 100 school students visit BSF outpost in Gede India-Bangladesh border

Kolkata: A group of over 100 school students from Krishnanagar High School, including National Cadet Corps (NCC) boys from the school, and 21 teachers arrived at the Border Security Force border outpost (BOP) at Gede, in West Bengal’s Nadia district, to familiarize themselves with the India-Bangladesh border and the functioning of the BSF. During the visit, they were welcomed by the local BSF battalion commander Sujeet Kumar. After that, they were taken to “zero line” near Border Pillar No. 76 Main.

On the zero line, they were briefed about the international border (also known as the Gede-Darshana border), demarcation of the border by the border pillars, and international protocols relating to border guarding by the border-guarding forces. They were also introduced to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) troops, manning the Bangladesh side of the border.

At BOP Gede, Sanjay Kumar, deputy inspector general (DIG), also interacted with the students. During his interaction, he replied to their queries and motivated them to join the BSF. The students were exposed to the functioning of the BSF at the Gede Land Customs Station, Bureau of Immigration, Central Board of Excise and Customs personnel, and the Government Railway Police at the Gede railway station.

A dog show and weapon display were also organized at BOP Gede for the students, which they found very interesting.

In the last phase of the visit, the students were taken to BOP Kadipur where they visited the Kadipur Bakery Shop Taste Hub, which was established by the local BSF unit for the employment of young people and girls of the border region. They were also taken to Arogya Marg created in the area of responsibility of the unit where an integrated scheme of scientific beekeeping and cultivation of medicinal, flowering, aromatic plants, and pisciculture is carried out.

The students and teachers found this visit very educational and enchanting. They had lunch at the BSF camp at Gede and concluded their daylong visit at around 5pm.

About Gede BOP

The BSF Gede BOP is at the Gede-Darshana checkpoint at the India-Bangladesh international border, around 132 kilometres from Kolkata. It is near the border village of Gede in the Krishnaganj community development (CD) block in the Krishnanagar Sadar subdivision of West Bengal’s Nadia district.

The Gede railway station is the last railway station on the Indian side of the border. On the Bangladesh side, the first railway station in the region is the Darshana railway station.

The Maitree Express train, which runs between Kolkata’s Sealdah station and Dhaka border-point route at Gede-Darshana. The train is managed by both the Indian Railways and Bangladesh Railway.
