In order to give the exposure about the Indian Army’s formation, challenges and operating environment, the defence attaches from friendly countries based in New Delhi have visited Leh in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time.
As part of the Indian Army’s outreach towards Foreign Service attaches posted in defence wings of embassies posted in India, a FAT has been conducted from October 15-18, sources in defence establishment said.
The objective of the tour is to familiarize that the attaches community with the prevailing situation, challenges and operating environment in the border areas, enhance mutual understanding between friendly nations and showcase cultural heritage of the diverse country.
Earlier, the defence attaches were not allowed to go anywhere freely and were only permitted to visit select places or approved locations across the country.
Among the defence attaches visited Leh include the US, Russia, France, Australia, Hungary, Singapore and South Africa.
They also visited the world famous tourist hotspots such as Pangong Tso Lake and other renowned monasteries.
It is being looked as part of a series of government initiatives under "open up" policy.
In August this year, the home ministry had lifted the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) from 29 inhabited islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which were prohibited for foreigners.
