New Delhi: The Indian Army’s commitment to self-reliance and technological advancement was vividly displayed at the annual Idea and Innovation Competition and Seminar – “Inno-Yoddha 2024-25” – held at the Manekshaw Centre, here in the capital, on Thursday. The event, presided by the Army chief, Gen Upendra Dwivedi, highlighted 22 top-tier innovations aimed at enhancing operational, logistical, and training capabilities within the force.

Inno-Yoddha, an initiative by the Army, is designed to identify and nurture in-house innovations that address existing capability gaps, promote logistics efficiency, and bolster training methodologies. The competition serves as a platform where soldiers from various ranks present their creative solutions developed from real-world challenges faced on the ground.

This year, out of 75 innovations that underwent a rigorous selection process from unit level to command headquarters, 22 were selected for their potential impact and feasibility.

Among the standout innovations was a drone capable of firing rockets, showcasing the Army’s venture into advanced unmanned systems. Another significant highlight was the development of an AI system designed to prevent fratricide – a critical issue highlighted by recent military conflicts globally. This AI technology, named NABH AI, rapidly identifies aircraft to avoid friendly fire incidents, demonstrating the Army’s focus on safety and precision in combat scenarios.

Additionally, the competition featured the Fast Erection Rubik PD, a system for quick construction of bunkers in forward areas using prefabricated interlocking blocks, significantly reducing both time and manpower required for such tasks. The Baaz UAV (unmanned aerial system) was also showcased, reflecting the Army’s push towards enhancing surveillance and logistical support in high-altitude areas.

Gen Dwivedi emphasized during the event that innovation is not just a buzzword but a critical mindset that propels military evolution and national progress. He praised the dedication behind each project, noting that these innovations are the result of countless hours of thought, research, and testing. The Army’s approach to fostering these innovations aligns with India's broader aim for self-reliance in defence technology.

The showcased innovations are set to proceed further into phases like research and development (R&D), design and development (D&D), and will be scrutinized by the Army Technology Board (ATB) for eventual integration into military operations. Through this initiative, the Army hopes to nurture a culture of innovation within its ranks, which will make it a more agile and technologically adept force that is ready for future challenges.
