Aiming to establish Indian Navy as a credible maritime security provider in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), Nirmala Sitharaman-headed Defence Ministry has provided a major boost to Navy by signing capital acquisition contracts worth Rs 17,000 crore in the last six months.
As per the sources in the Defence establishment, “In the last six months, we have signed capital acquisition contracts worth Rs 17,000 crore.”
The capital acquisition means acquiring new assets that include equipment, warships, inventory and software.
The ministry also sanctioned revenue procurement proposals of Rs 3,000 crore in the same period.
In an effort to equip Indian Navy with world class infrastructure, the ministry approved an allocation of Rs 2,300 crore. Also, the ministry sanctioned additional recruitment of 1,080 personnel in the navy.
On Friday, Ms Sitharaman had urged the top echelons in the Indian Navy to induct women in the non-officer cadre. Giving more opportunities to women was also on the agenda of the three-day naval commanders’ conference, said the sources.
Currently, nearly 600 women are serving only as officers in the maritime force.
Besides, India signed a white shipping agreement with Kenya and Nigeria. The agreement would enable partner states to establish an information network allowing their navies to exchange information about ships in their oceanic territories.
