Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday reviewed the overall security arrangements in Kashmir valley and preparedness of Amarnath Yatra, commencing from June 28. An Army official told UNI that the minister and Army Chief General Bipin Rawat visited Baltal Base Camp to review security arrangements for Amarnath Yatra. It was her first visit after the-month-long Ramazan ceasefire ended. During the fresh operations, security forces killed nine militants, including ISJK chief Dawood, in three encounters since the operation against militants were resumed in the valley. “The Defence Minister visits the Chinar Corps of the Army along with Gen Rawat and reviews overall security situation in the Valley,” he said. He said the minister was given an update on the effective intelligence grids and successful counter-infiltration and counter-militant operations undertaken in the recent past which have contributed towards improving the security environment in the Kashmir Valley. “Ms Sitharaman was also briefed on the security and administrative arrangements made for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra,” he said. Defence sources said she was also informed about the counter infiltration measures taken to foil any attempt by militants to sneak into this side. A senior Army officer said there are 250 to 270 militants waiting at launch pads near the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) to infiltrate into this side. He added that there are 250 militants active in the Valley, particularly in south Kashmir. Later, the minister held a meeting with Governor N N Vohra in Srinagar and discusses the overall security situation in the Valley.
