Unnecessary controversies being created on offset partner: Govt

The government on Saturday said unnecessary controversies are being sought to be created after former French President Francois Hollande statement relating to selection of Reliance Defence as the offset partner of Dassault aviation, the company which makes Rafale fighter jet.
“Unnecessary controversies are being sought to be created following media reports regarding a statement purportedly made by the former French President, Francois Hollande, concerning the selection of Reliance Defence as the Offset partner by Dassault, the manufacturers of Rafale aircraft,” the defence ministry said in a statement.
It also added that the reported statement perhaps needs to be seen in its full context – where the French media has raised issues of conflict of interest involving persons close to the former President.
His subsequent statements are also relevant in this regard.
The government has stated earlier and again reiterates that it had no role in the selection of Reliance Defence as the Offset partner, the ministry said.
The BJP-led NDA government signed a government to government deal of Rs 59,000 crore with French government for purchase of 36 Rafale Aircraft in a fly-away condition.
The deal got in political slugfest after Congress President Rahul Gandhi raked up the issue ahead of Gujarat assembly elections last year.
