State-owned aerospace and defence company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) emerged Number 1 investor with the announcement of Rs 1,200 crore pumping-in of money across six nodal points of Uttar Pradesh defence industrial corridor.
Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath had on Saturday formally launched the second defence corridor here, after Tamil Nadu.
A total of Rs 3,732 crore of investment were announced by the defence equipment makers on the occasion.
After HAL, Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) is the largest investor with Rs 1,077 crore, followed by MKU, BEL, Bharat Forge and PTC with Rs 900 crore, 240 crore, 200 crore and 115 crore, respectively.
“We are investing a total of Rs 1,200 crore in UP defence corridor. We are investing Rs 700 crore for capacity enhancement of Sukhoi 30 repair and overhauling project and upgradation of LAC Tejas in Lucknow, Rs 270 crore for modernization and maintenance of Korwa plant and also upgradation of Sukhoi 30. We are trying to put Rs 200 crore investment for transport aircraft Dornier in Kanpur and Rs 30 crore as capital investment at Naini airbase,” said HAL chairman T Suvarna Raju at the sidelines of inaugural event.
“Over 110 people were not working at Naini base for last 20 years. Now, they are working for HAL. We are trying to expand the scope of the businesses there. It’s a first step to start. Currently, they are making the harnesses of aircraft LCA and helicopter Dhruv and we tend to expand the structural components,” said Raju.
Boeing India head Pratyush Kumar announced that the Boeing will set up skill development centre at Naini with HAL. “We will select young trainees and train them with world class curriculum bring from our facilities all over the world,” said Kumar.
“Boeing and we jointly train the local people there using Naini airbase, which is 100 per cent subsidiary of HAL. We will select people from that area and train them in harness manufacture so that they would be employable anywhere,” the HAL chairman echoed Kumar.
During 2018-19 Budget, the government had announced to create two defence corridors in the country in an effort to give impetus to its ambitious “Make in India” initiative, which was unveiled in 2014 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The government had chosen 25 key sectors for this initiative. Defence manufacturing was among one of them.
For corridor in UP, six nodal points have been identified that include, Agra, Aligarh, Kanpur, Lucknow, Jhansi and Chitrakoot.
